From my first experience with ophthalmology, I fell in love with the impact a short surgery can make on someone’s quality of life; that is how I knew I wanted to be a cataract surgeon. As I progressed in my training I saw how glaucoma can be a devastating and debilitating disease. I chose to specialize in glaucoma because I want to help prevent blindness through the most up-to-date comprehensive care.
Dr. Nahmias
Dr. Javier Nahmias is a fellowship-trained, board-eligible glaucoma and cataract specialist. He is trained to diagnose, monitor and medically or surgically treat various forms of glaucoma in addition to complex cataracts.
He is originally from Santiago, Chile but has called South Florida home for most of his life. He completed his medical degree at Florida International University and went on to pursue specialty training in ophthalmology at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. He then returned home to complete his glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Dr. Nahmias chose ophthalmology because he values the gift of sight and loves the impact cataract surgery can make on one’s quality of life. He specialized in glaucoma because he enjoys building life-long relationships with his patients to help preserve their vision.
Dr. Nahmias is a member of the American Glaucoma Society and is actively involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists by providing guidance and lectures to medical students from his alma mater.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Nahmias enjoys spending time with his wife, Consuelo, and their puppy, Oakley. They enjoy going for hikes, traveling the US and finding new culinary experiences. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
